Departmental finding

A manageable existential wobble

There is room to care about something. Unfortunately, the calculator cannot choose it for you.

Meaning Index
47 / 100

A value judgement built into this toy model.

Happiness
86 %

Illustrative satisfaction, not a mental-health measure.

Autonomy
66 / 100

How much authorship remains with you.

Boredom
14 / 100

Unused capacity to stare at the ceiling.

Achievement
45 / 100

Owned progress through manageable challenge.

Existential weather
19 / 100

0 = clear; 100 = heavy philosophical fog.

Why this happened

↳Challenge is 50/100; available capacity is 45/100. There is room for a challenge you can actually meet.

↳AI handles 45% of the assistance setting. It increases capacity but reduces ownership; autonomy is 66/100.

↳Connection supports satisfaction; free time amplifies your room for learning and chosen effort.

↳Existential forecast: mostly clear, with occasional passing awareness of mortality.

What this instrument assumes

  1. These are satirical indices, not psychological measurements. The Meaning Index encodes one debatable set of values; it does not measure the worth of a life.
  2. Chosen challenge is most rewarding near available capacity. Unmanageable difficulty creates overload. Suffering is not a prerequisite for meaning.
  3. Comfort restores capacity, assistance reduces effort, and automation can reduce authorship. Social connection has diminishing returns; a solitary person can still have a meaningful life.
  4. Knowledge may enable engagement or intensify reflection. Free time supports exploration but also amplifies boredom. The existential forecast is a joke, not a clinical assessment.

How the numbers connect

Slider settings are scaled from 0 to 1. “Clamp” keeps a score between 0 and 1 before display as 0–100. The same inputs always give the same result.

Challenge needs a fit

Capacity = (0.20 + 0.50 × comfort + 0.30 × assistance) × (0.35 + 0.65 × free time). Effective effort = challenge × (1 − 0.55 × assistance). Mastery peaks near 0.25 + 0.35 × capacity, then falls when challenge is too easy or too hard.

A deliberately arguable index

Meaning combines achievement (32%), autonomous engagement (28%), engaged knowledge (18%), reflection (12%) and connection (10%). All are scaled to 0–1. Boredom grows with unused free time; overload reduces achievement and happiness. These weights are editorial choices, not research findings.
